Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing

huddles2@msu.edu

Dr. Patricia Huddleston is a Professor of Retailing in the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing. She teaches undergraduate courses in Retail Buying-Inventory Management and Retail Strategy. At the graduate level, she teaches Research Topics in Retailing and International Consumer Behavior. She serves as an advisor to both Master's and Ph.D. students in Retailing.

She joined the Retailing faculty at MSU in 1987. Since that time, she has pursued an international research agenda, with a focus the transition economies of Russia and Poland. She was present at a pivotal moment in Russian history. She witnessed the failed coup of August 1991, while she was in Moscow gathering data. Since then, she and Dr. Linda K. Good have published work on Russian and Polish worker morale (International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management), Price-Quality product perceptions of Russian and Polish consumers (International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research) and Ethnocentric tendencies in Russian and Polish consumers (International Marketing Review).

In 1996, Dr. Huddleston spent a sabbatical in St. Petersburg, Russia, teaching the first marketing course at Leningrad Oblast University. In 1998, she pioneered a study abroad program to Russia and Poland which focuses on Retail Distribution. This intensive, short term program provides the opportunity for students to gain knowledge of retailing in post-transition economies.

More recently, Dr. Huddleston's research interests have broadened to include customer loyalty, with a focus on food stores. A recent study drew comparisons between traditional (e.g. Kroger's) and specialty (e.g. Whole Foods) food store shoppers and found that specialty store food shopper are more loyal than conventional store shoppers.

In 2004, Dr. Huddleston spent six months in Australia at Monash University, interviewing retail CEOs for a book chapter on Retailing in Australia. As a result of the time spent in Australia, she will collaborate with Stella Minahan from Deakin University on a book about Why Women Shop.

Dr. Huddleston's activities outside of Michigan State include a strong commitment to Zonta International, a women's service organization committed to improving the status of women world wide through service and advocacy. She served as the President of the East Lansing chapter in 2005-2006, overseeing fundraising and service activities which benefit a variety of community organizations.
