    Teresa Mastin: Profile

    • I (and a co-author) have recently submitted the following manuscript: Mastin, T., & Campo, S. “Conflicting Messages: Overweight and Obesity Advertisements and Articles in Black Magazines,” submitted August 24, 2005 to The Howard Journal of Communications. This manuscript will be presented in November at the APHA conference.

    • Additionally, we are in the process of working on a companion manuscript that focuses on the lack of overweight and obesity related environmental strategies offered in women’s magazines that target Black and White audiences. We hope to have this manuscript out within several weeks.

    • I also have an interest in how direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertisements are presented to various publics. More specifically, I am interested in knowing whether socioeconomic status impacts what DTC ads are presented to various audiences in various media. I (and several co-authors) am in the process of working on a “revise resubmit” of the following article: Mastin, T., Andsager, J.L., Choi, J. & Lee, K. “Targeting Black and Female Audiences with Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Drug Advertising: A Content Analysis of Magazines, 1992-2002,” Health Communication. This paper was presented earlier this month at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference.

    • Developmental Stage: I am one of numerous co-investigators on a grant that has a goal of obtaining baseline data on elder abuse in the Michigan Medicaid population. I am laying the groundwork this semester for a study that will examine the portrayals of elder abuse in various magazines genres. The purpose of the study is to determine how elder abuse is being framed in popular periodicals directed toward the general public.I am also laying the foundation for a study that will examine how mental illness is covered in Black media.
