HRCC launches Day of Innovation Event, featuring Bettinghaus Endowed Lecture

August 7, 2019 - HRCC

The MSU Health & Risk Communication Center is proud to announce its first Day of Innovation event, taking place at the College of Communication Arts & Sciences on September 27, 2019.

This event will feature a panel discussion on Innovations & Insights in the health and risk communication fields in the morning, followed by the annual Bettinghaus Endowed Lecture in the afternoon.

Health & Risk Communication M.A. alumni and current students, MSU faculty, and any other health and communication professionals are invited to attend.

The Innovations & Insights panel includes the following guests, who will discuss the latest trends in health and risk communication.

  • Anna Melville, Director of Population Health at Sparrow Health System, and HRC MA alumna
  • Alexander Plum, Director of Innovation at Henry Ford Health System, and MSU alumnus
  • Monique Turner, ComArtSci Professor and Communication Dept. Chair

In the afternoon, the annual Bettinghaus Endowed Lecture will feature Dr. Kami Silk, who is Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Communication Department Chair at the University of Delaware. Her talk is titled Translational Communication Science for Transdisciplinary Research: The Breast Cancer and Environment Research Program.

Dr. Silk works on health message design, with an emphasis on translating complex health information to the lay public. Her current research focuses on designing health messages for women about links between environmental determinants and breast cancer risks. Dr. Silk is also interested in the role of health literacy and numeracy in audience understanding of risk messages, particularly among low-income segments of the population.

A networking lunch will also be provided for registered attendees.

Registration is required for this event. Registration is capped and will close on Wednesday, Sept. 11, or whenever the signup limit is reached. Further event details and event registration can be found at the EventBrite page.

This event coincides with MSU's homecoming weekend, which means returning HRC MA alumni can attend this event for a little professional development and networking before enjoying other MSU Homecoming activities.
