As experts and stakeholders in the areas of health and risk communication, public, environmental, and animal health the following people strongly oppose U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the World Health Organization (WHO) during the deadliest global pandemic in a century. We believe this decision is dangerous and shortsighted.
As the foremost institution for global health research and response, the WHO has a mandate to monitor public health risks, coordinate responses to health emergencies, and promote the highest standard of health and well-being for all. Since its founding over 70 years ago, in which the U.S. played an important role, the WHO has led the global response to health emergencies and global pandemics such as tuberculosis, HIV, malaria, zika, avian influenza, and SARS. The WHO is at the forefront of global collaboration on issues of human, animal, and ecological health.
At a time when COVID-19 case counts are rising exponentially in much of the United States and around the world, the U.S. and the world need the leadership of the WHO and global cooperation among health practitioners, researchers, and public health officials more urgently than ever before.
An effective response to COVID-19, climate change, and other problems facing the world today must be evidence-based and grounded in data; it requires global cooperation, coordination and communication from all countries around the world, especially the United States. Indeed, the pandemic is a stark reminder that the fates of the U.S. and the rest of the world are deeply interconnected.
This resolution calls for the Trump Administration to immediately reverse this decision, restore and protect funding to WHO and work to ensure global cooperation in the pandemic response.
Signed,
Maria Lapinski, Director, Health and Risk Communication Center (HRCC), Michigan State University (MSU)
